This is a mudbox sculpture I did as an attempt something that would hopefully resemble classic sculpture more than a 3D model. But despite all the good intentions that I had initially, it did end up looking more digital than anything else. Still, its not a bad model and I kind of like it. When I do this kind of organic sculpting I begin in mudbox, working out the rough shapes from a basic object like a sphere or cube. Then I take that rough into 3ds Max where I retopologize it by hand to get a stable basemesh that will subdivide evenly and have enough geometry in critical places like the eyes. Then I export that basemesh back into mudbox for the fully detailed sculpt. Its a much faster method than the old way of first modeling a basemesh in max and then exporting it to sculpt on, its much easier and quicker to sculpt organic proportions than to model them. And you can really get excellent geometry through retopo, you can tweak it as much as you like without having to worry about messing up the shape of the model. |
